Galloway Captiva Triathlon Donates $35,000 to Support the Fight Against Childhood Hunger
October 16, 2017Hurricane Irma was a historic storm that left many homes and businesses damaged, and events canceled throughout Southwest Florida. The 7th Annual Galloway Captiva Triathlon for charity was to be held on Saturday, Sept. 9th and Sunday, Sept. 10th at the South Seas Island Resort on Captiva Island. This year’s event had to be canceled due to Hurricane Irma, but was still able to raise over $35,000 for Community Cooperative and its Healthy School Pantry Program which provides emergency food for more than 6,000 local children and their families each year.
“The success of this event is due to the outstanding coordinated efforts of the event planning team of Ken and Kate Gooderham and Angie Ferguson, as well as our volunteers, sponsors, and of course, the race participants,” said Tracey Galloway, CEO of Community Cooperative. “We hope all those who signed up for the race feel proud to know that the proceeds are benefitting families who need support and help, now more than ever.”
“We were disappointed to cancel this year’s race due to Hurricane Irma, because we always look forward to seeing all of our athletes have fun, reach goals and make a difference in our community, but the safety of all our volunteers and athletes had to be a priority. We are grateful for the opportunity to still support a great charity and know that even if the race didn’t happen, we are still helping to feed thousands of children across Southwest Florida,” said Kate Gooderham of Gooderham & Associates and Southwest Florida Events.
More than 850 adults and 225 children compete annually in the Triathlon, with some 70 volunteers working the two-day event. The 8th Annual Galloway Captiva Triathlon is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15th and Sunday Sept. 16th of 2018.
